What Is Dysphagia?

Dysphagia is the inability or struggle to eat or drink food and/or liquid. Different disorders, diseases, and conditions can cause dysphagia. There are three types of dysphagia:

Oral dysphagia: Tongue weakness after a stroke, difficulty chewing food, or neuromuscular issues are problems that trigger dysphagia in the mouth.
Oropharyngeal dysphagia: This problem is set in the throat and can be the result of a neurological or muscular condition.
Esophageal dysphagia: Usually caused when something blocks or compresses the esophagus, such as scar tissue from acid reflux, this type of dysphagia could also result in a muscular disorder or pouches in the esophagus.

Dysphagia may occur because of muscle spasms in the esophagus due to insufficient chewing or other internal complications. Individuals also describe dysphagia as a feeling of food being lodged in the chest or neck. Should you experience such symptoms and need treatment for dysphagia, contact our skilled medical care team at Crystal Canyon ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery in Flagstaff, AZ to learn more about the treatments available that will help you get back to a better life.

I am very pleased to be a patient in Dr. Fratianni’s practice. My chronic ear/nasal issues were negatively affecting my quality of life and I needed expert advice. Dr. Fratianni took the time to advise me on my test results. She incorporated my results into a comprehensive medical plan, one that supports better health and wellness. Dr. Fratianni has given me the confidence to become my own advocate/ partner in my health care — for this I am thankful. Now, my quality of life has improved and I can enjoy my active lifestyle again. Thank you Crystal Canyon ENT

Went for hearing loss,1 ear. CCENT  made an appintment for next day, took me on time, measured hearing in a sound-proof room, cleaned my ears, found an infection in the ear & nose, wrote a prescription & protocol, all in 30min, no rush, just no wasted time. Hearing’s now better than ever. Thanks!

I started my journey with Crystal Canyon in 2022. Tey are very informative and surgery was scheduled quickly. Well the day came for surgery and found out I had COVID. Surgery was cancelled. I got rescheduled for May of 2023, (this was due to my schedule not Crystal Canyons). When surgery came it went very well, I could not be happier. The results and outcome are life changing. Communication with the office is good. Doctor is attentive and takes time to explain things when you have questions. I definitely recommend and have recommended Crystal Canyon to other friends.
