What Is Tinnitus?

Generally described as ringing, buzzing, or phantom noises in one or both ears, tinnitus is a common problem that affects about 20% of the U.S. population, especially frequent in older adults. Most people with this condition have subjective tinnitus with sounds described as hissing, clicking, roaring, or humming and can only be heard by the affected person. The sounds can be heard in different pitches and frequencies. With pulsatile tinnitus, a whooshing sound or rhythmic pulsing can be heard. At Crystal Canyon ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery, our expert team can help diagnose any underlying condition associated with tinnitus, such as an ear injury, ear infection, certain medications, blood vessel issues, or hearing loss.

Tinnitus often affects a patient’s quality of life. Besides the physical symptoms, they may also experience a number of other issues, including:

  • Sleep problems
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety

For many patients, treating the underlying causes or reducing the noise can help make tinnitus less obvious. Reach out to our office in Flagstaff, AZ for help and testing.

How Is Tinnitus Treated?

Our team may be able to reduce your symptoms by treating the underlying cause of your hearing condition. Some treatments include:

Earwax removal: Removing earwax causing blockage within the ears can decrease tinnitus.

Blood vessel condition treatment: High blood pressure and other vascular causes for tinnitus may require surgery, medication, or other treatments to address the problem.

Hearing aids: Tinnitus caused by age-related or excessive sound exposure may improve with the use of hearing aids.

Medication modifications: Medications that may cause tinnitus may be modified or switched to minimize tinnitus.

Noise suppression: We may recommend some electronic devices, such as white noise machines or masking devices, to suppress tinnitus symptoms or make them less noticeable at night.

I am very pleased to be a patient in Dr. Fratianni’s practice. My chronic ear/nasal issues were negatively affecting my quality of life and I needed expert advice. Dr. Fratianni took the time to advise me on my test results. She incorporated my results into a comprehensive medical plan, one that supports better health and wellness. Dr. Fratianni has given me the confidence to become my own advocate/ partner in my health care — for this I am thankful. Now, my quality of life has improved and I can enjoy my active lifestyle again. Thank you Crystal Canyon ENT

I started my journey with Crystal Canyon in 2022. Tey are very informative and surgery was scheduled quickly. Well the day came for surgery and found out I had COVID. Surgery was cancelled. I got rescheduled for May of 2023, (this was due to my schedule not Crystal Canyons). When surgery came it went very well, I could not be happier. The results and outcome are life changing. Communication with the office is good. Doctor is attentive and takes time to explain things when you have questions. I definitely recommend and have recommended Crystal Canyon to other friends.
