What Is Sleep Apnea?
The disorder known as sleep apnea is recognized as continued stops in your breathing during sleep. This is caused by the muscles relaxing and gravity pulling your airway closed. The momentary suffocation that results produces excessive stress on the body, which can result in cardiovascular conditions, like mood change, weight gain, fatigue, hypertension, and memory loss. There are many snoring or sleep apnea alternatives to pursue, ranging from airway surgeries like a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, or maxillofacial surgery to the use of a CPAP device or nerve implant. At Crystal Canyon ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery, we will help you find the right treatment that will give you relief and restful sleep. Schedule an appointment at our Flagstaff, AZ office today.
How Does Sleep Apnea Treatment Work?
Treatment for sleep apnea depends on the type of sleep apnea our team diagnoses. Obstructive sleep apnea stops breathing during sleep because the airway is partially or completely blocked by tissue, the jaw, or the tongue. Central sleep apnea is the result of a breathing problem with signals sent from the brain stem. Sleep apnea solutions range from noninvasive treatments like the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which keeps the airway open with an unrestricted high-pressure setting treatment using a tube connected to a mask that covers the mouth and/or nose area. We may recommend surgery, which could include the following:
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP): This surgery involves reshaping tissue in the throat, which may involve portions of the tonsils, uvula, and soft palate.
Tonsillectomy: Removing the tonsils reduces the symptoms for individuals who have mild to moderate sleep apnea.
Jaw or tongue surgeries: Maxillomandibular advancement surgery moves the jaw forward, creating more space for the tonsils, tongue, and soft palate to function properly. If the base of the tongue causes airway problems, surgeries to improve the tongue muscle and its placement can help open the airway for sleep apnea patients.
Nasal procedures: Different treatments improve breathing and open airways, including:
- Rhinoplasty: Surgery to reshape the nose
- Septoplasty: Straightens a deviated septum
- Nasal obstruction: Removing nasal obstructions increases airflow through the nose. We also offer another option with LATERA®, an absorbable nasal implant that fits inside the lateral wall of the nose, reducing nasal obstruction issues and helping you breathe better.
Nerve implant: An alternative to the CPAP involves implanting an electronic device that monitors breathing patterns and delivers mild stimulation to the tongue, moving it forward and helping to clear the airway to improve breathing.

Went for hearing loss,1 ear. CCENT made an appintment for next day, took me on time, measured hearing in a sound-proof room, cleaned my ears, found an infection in the ear & nose, wrote a prescription & protocol, all in 30min, no rush, just no wasted time. Hearing’s now better than ever. Thanks!
I started my journey with Crystal Canyon in 2022. Tey are very informative and surgery was scheduled quickly. Well the day came for surgery and found out I had COVID. Surgery was cancelled. I got rescheduled for May of 2023, (this was due to my schedule not Crystal Canyons). When surgery came it went very well, I could not be happier. The results and outcome are life changing. Communication with the office is good. Doctor is attentive and takes time to explain things when you have questions. I definitely recommend and have recommended Crystal Canyon to other friends.
A truly great practice! Everyone there is super knowledgeable and seems to genuinely care about everyone they interact with - both in person and over the phone. I have had surgery through this clinic and have always had exceptional care.
Doctors are very knowledgeable. Great staff. Dr Fratianni is great.
