Throat conditions, like tonsilitis and pharyngitis, may begin with a sore throat or hoarseness. Most throat conditions are minor and heal independently, but more serious problems could require surgery to remove tonsils or cancer. Although considered a common childhood illness, tonsillitis does affect adults. The lymph nodes in the back of the throat are part of the immune system, producing white blood cells to help fight infections; however, there are some bacteria and viruses that can trigger tonsillitis. Pharyngitis is a sore throat triggered by a bacterial or viral infection or less common causes of pharyngitis may be allergies, reflux, trauma, cancer, or certain toxins.
Common symptoms of both of these conditions include:
- A sore throat in combination with a fever
- Dry, scratchy throat
- Swollen tonsils
- Difficulty swallowing
- Swollen lymph nodes

How Do We Treat Tonsilitis and Pharyngitis?
Pharyngitis treatment depends on the cause. Viral pharyngitis usually goes away on its own, but we do recommend pain relievers and staying hydrated to help alleviate the symptoms. Antibiotics may be the treatment for certain throat conditions, including pharyngitis, strep throat, mononucleosis, or other bacterial infections.
Chronic tonsilitis, frequent throat infections, strep throat, or other serious conditions, including antibiotic immunity, may prompt our providers to recommend a tonsillectomy. A tonsillectomy also relieves any breathing or swallowing problems resulting from tonsilitis. We may recommend surgery to prevent recurring tonsilitis or to treat the following:
- Chronic bacterial or severe tonsilitis
- Swollen or enlarged tonsils that cause airway obstructions
- Snoring or sleep apnea
- Cancerous tumors
- Bleeding tonsils

I started my journey with Crystal Canyon in 2022. Tey are very informative and surgery was scheduled quickly. Well the day came for surgery and found out I had COVID. Surgery was cancelled. I got rescheduled for May of 2023, (this was due to my schedule not Crystal Canyons). When surgery came it went very well, I could not be happier. The results and outcome are life changing. Communication with the office is good. Doctor is attentive and takes time to explain things when you have questions. I definitely recommend and have recommended Crystal Canyon to other friends.
