What Is Eustachian Tube Dysfunction?

Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD), which affects the tube that connects the ear and throat, occurs when the tube’s lining becomes inflamed or blocked or does not open and close properly, resulting in fluid accumulation and ear pressure. When the eustachian tube becomes dysfunctional, some of the symptoms you may experience include pain, tinnitus, clicking or popping sounds, reduced or muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness in the ear, or balance issues. Crystal Canyon ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery provides personalized care for optimal ear health. Contact our practice in Flagstaff, AZ today to get the relief you need.

How Is Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Treated?

Our team will conduct an in-house comprehensive hearing analysis to diagnose and treat eustachian tube dysfunction. ETD can be resolved in 1 – 2 weeks on its own. Actions, such as yawning, chewing gum, or swallowing, can sometimes reopen the tubes and provide some relief. The Valsalva maneuver, which involves closing and pinching the nostrils with the mouth shut and taking a deep breath, is another method to treat ETD. Our team may also suggest some prescribed remedies or over-the-counter medications, like decongestants to reduce inflammation in the lining of the tubes, antibiotics if you’re diagnosed with a bacterial infection, or antihistamines or a steroid nasal spray for allergies.

Other treatments to medically manage chronic symptoms of ETD may include ear wax removal, eardrum repair, surgically removing fluid from the middle ear, or implanting pediatric ear tubes to help drain frequent fluid buildup.

I am very pleased to be a patient in Dr. Fratianni’s practice. My chronic ear/nasal issues were negatively affecting my quality of life and I needed expert advice. Dr. Fratianni took the time to advise me on my test results. She incorporated my results into a comprehensive medical plan, one that supports better health and wellness. Dr. Fratianni has given me the confidence to become my own advocate/ partner in my health care — for this I am thankful. Now, my quality of life has improved and I can enjoy my active lifestyle again. Thank you Crystal Canyon ENT

Went for hearing loss,1 ear. CCENT  made an appintment for next day, took me on time, measured hearing in a sound-proof room, cleaned my ears, found an infection in the ear & nose, wrote a prescription & protocol, all in 30min, no rush, just no wasted time. Hearing’s now better than ever. Thanks!

I started my journey with Crystal Canyon in 2022. Tey are very informative and surgery was scheduled quickly. Well the day came for surgery and found out I had COVID. Surgery was cancelled. I got rescheduled for May of 2023, (this was due to my schedule not Crystal Canyons). When surgery came it went very well, I could not be happier. The results and outcome are life changing. Communication with the office is good. Doctor is attentive and takes time to explain things when you have questions. I definitely recommend and have recommended Crystal Canyon to other friends.
